Our skin is the first organ in our body to interact with the environment. But our skin is not one, but three layers: the ectoderm, the mesoderm, and the endoderm. These layers both trap and embed the memories within them. By laminating tracing paper, the three layers are created.
The first section of the series Layers is four, three by four foot black and white pieces of assemblage art. Black gauze like moves from the top to the bottom of the pieces signifying the progression of the darkness in our lives. As soon as I made the first four panels, the creation of the last two Process art pieces was purely cathartic. The first piece is a ten by three-foot laminated work, sized to envelope the viewer in the darkness of the black cloth moving down the piece. By tearing the layers of laminated paper into different depths, I added texture to signify the erosion of life. Rolled up transfers of personal photographs, that only hint of the identity of the subject has been added to signify images of the affected humans. This piece portrays how life is eroded by the darkness.
